CUTTING DOWN – TIPS TO STAY ON TRACK
Their drinking - your support
Is someone else’s use of alcohol causing you concern or anxiety? They might be a partner, close relative, family member, friend or colleague. Being concerned about someone else’s drinking can often lead to anxiety and stress.
A colleague or a friend’s drinking
If you’re concerned about a friend or colleague’s drinking its best to tackle this head on. Here are some tips:
- Talk to the person you’re worried about. Tell them you are concerned about them. Find a time when you and they are calm and sober. Don’t do this over a drink.
- Tell them about the problems their drinking is causing. Be objective and own up to any part you play in this.
- Listen to them. Find out how they feel about their drinking and how it helps them.
- Help the person who is drinking to be realistic and make a plan.
A family member’s or partner’s drinking
It is often most difficult to cope with a close adult relative or partner whose drinking is causing problems. As well as helping them, you may need to make sure you get help or yourself. Here’s some tips for family members:
- Try and be honest with them about how their drinking affects you and any other family members – be objective and be specific.
- Avoid getting into arguments – state your feelings openly
- Don’t try to hide the effects of the person’s drinking, eg phoning work with excuses – they are ultimately responsible for their actions
- Do get help for yourself even if the problem drinker is not prepared to do so yet.
- Decide on a realistic plan of action for everyone – using professional support if needed.
- Make it clear what action you will take if they do not keep to what’s been decided
